Okay, so I never promised I'd make regular, monthly entries but I do apologize for taking almost six months to get to the second entry! That's excessive, even for me!
Let's take a little look back....
We held our first formal Executive meeting and established areas for each of the Executive members to head. We're hoping that the division of labour will help to keep us all motivated and moving forward as our group and our goals grow and mature. Some of the areas outlined include Yarn, Fabrics, Kits, Advertising, Contacts and Expansion.
We held our 2nd Annual Hug-A-Thon at Mellor Hall (Duncan, BC) and it was a tremendous success! We had a wonderful turnout of volunteers (thank you one and all!) which made for a VERY productive day. Take a few minutes and go through the pictures; I'm sure you'll be impressed with our event.
We finally received the official notice that we were a Registered Society and after some discussion amongst the Executive, decided to postpone becoming a Registered Charity as the Government has some very stringent rules and regulations which are far beyond the scope of what we want for our "community-based service organization". They require audits and annual budgets and Board accountability etc, etc so we decided to wait for a year and review the decision at that time.
April was a very busy month as we continued to finish items started at the Hug-A-Thon, create new kits to go out to volunteers, sort incoming donations and prepare for the Garage Sale planned for May. (The object is to use the Garage Sale as a fundraiser but to also use it as a means to free up more storage space by removing donated items which we cannot use.) We also expanded our client base by adding some of the seniors facilities, a women's shelter and a street program to those we will be able to help this coming year. It's amazing how fast the HUGS program is growing! But NONE OF IT would be possible without our volunteers. I can't say thank you enough.
Garage Sale! Garage Sale! Garage Sale! The first two weeks were nothing but preparing for the Garage Sale. It was a wonderful success, netting us enough money to continue until the fall when our usual fundraiser, Christmas Chaos, happens. Thank you to spouses, offspring, co-workers and friends who all made the day go as planned. We were exhausted at the end of the day but it was so worth it!
